Matter is anything that has mass and occupied space.

• Matter can be broadly classified into two categories: pure substances and mixtures Pure substance are further classified as elements and compounds.


• A pure substance has a definite composition, and has definite melting and boiling points. • A mixture has no definite composition, and has no definite melting and boiling points. The constitution of a mixture can be separated by simple physical methods and the original properties of constit of a mixture are retained. A mixture has no fixed physical and chemical properties.

Mixtures are combinations of two or more pure substances that come in several forms. Most of the mixtures can be separated depending on the kind of mixture it is.

• The separation of mixtures becomes essential to obtain a useful component, to obtain a pure sample of a substance and to enhance purity of a substance, and to remove harmful and undesirable impurities • The basis of separation of a mixture is the fact that each component of a mixture has different physical and chemical properties.

• The various techniques used for separation of mixtures are handpicking, sieving, winnowing, magnet separation, gravitation, solvent extraction, fractional crystallisation, sedimentation and decantation, filtration, evaporation, crystallisation, froth floatation, sublimation, distillation, centrifugation, using a separating funnel, fractional distillation and chromatography,


A combination of methods can be used when a mixture consists of more than two components.
